#4: Field Notes
Sela's mother is Dr. Amaia Reyes, the ship's exobiologist. Ask her a question and you'll leave with several more.
The strip's words, panel by panel
- Dr. Reyes's lab, 2599. Cadet Sela Vahl, in uniform, asks her mother, Dr. Amaia Reyes, in a lab coat by a bench of flasks: "Mom? The pilot's exam is next week. Any advice?" Dr. Reyes: "What do you think it's testing?"
- By the lab's specimen stores. Sela: "Whether I can fly?" Dr. Reyes: "And what is flying, exactly?"
- Sela folds her arms: "Not crashing, mostly." Dr. Reyes points: "Fascinating. And why don't you crash?"
- Sela, a hand to her face: "Mom. Can't you just tell me the answer?" Dr. Reyes shrugs: "Would you trust an answer you didn't find yourself?"
- Sela turns to leave: "Fine. I'll ask Dad." Dr. Reyes, a hand over her eyes: "Field note: subject consulting the control group. Concerning."
