Graduation day was supposed to be the easy part.

The year is 2602. After generations in flight, the Mothership Dania has reached the planet it was named for. You are seventeen, fresh out of the Space Force Academy, with a training baton and a sergeant who doesn't care whose genes you've got.

Dania — First Encounter is a 2D Metroidvania action-platformer with the stats, loot and skill trees of an action RPG. Explore a colony ship 2.4 kilometres long, built as one connected map, while first contact with a living world goes wrong around you.

Fight like you mean it

  • Every attack has an answer: jump the low volley, duck the high one, dash through the wall. Bosses test what you've learned, not how fast you can press a button.
  • Baton, spear and shield each fight their own way. A shield guards by stance: stand to block high, crouch to block low.
  • Collect Specials and swap between them mid-fight: a sidearm you aim in eight directions, an Arc Pulse that stuns what's near and clears incoming fire, and more as you go.

Build your cadet

  • Four attributes, sixteen gear slots, and loot that rolls its own bonuses.
  • Upgrade gear at the Forge, break down what you don't need, and trade with the quartermaster and your own bloc's merchant.
  • One skill tree every cadet shares, and one that belongs to the family that raised you.

Choose who raised you

Home, with the parent who raised you

You were adopted into one of the ship's three blocs, and the choice lasts the whole save:

  • Dunsabian, the engineers: drones, barriers and field repairs.
  • Alfigan, security and chaplaincy: shield walls, heavy blows and stubborn faith.
  • Corulean, medicine and navigation: toxins, tonics and potions.

Each family has its own skill tree, its own merchant, and its own welcome when you come home.

One ship, one map

  • The Mothership Dania is a single connected world: lecture halls, markets, a park under glass, kitchens and cargo holds, joined by trams and lifts.
  • New modules open old doors, starting with the Dash.
  • The ship changes with the story. Districts lock down, and corridors you knew fill with things that got out.

Something got out

  • The exobiology program brought the planet's wildlife aboard. On one bad day, every specimen broke containment at the same hour.
  • Meet fifteen species in Act I, from the Puffkin that inflates and gusts to the mimic that passes for a trash can until you walk by.
  • Weaken them, capture them with the Containment Kit, and fill Dr. Reyes's Codex. One of them may decide to follow you home.

You will win every fight

The war is another matter. First Encounter is the story of how a colony lost its ship and found a home, told across three Acts.

Trained for alien worlds. Assigned to the griddle. (The second page I ever drew of this, redrawn in the game's pixels.)
